The weekend beta event started this morning so I loaded up the pre-order cd I have. Had to create a new account, which is ok since I hear all the previous characters were wiped anyway. I had some trouble creating a character, the "next" button was greyed out. I forgot that characters have to have 2 names. All was good after that.
I made:
Sapphire Sniper,
my
Elementalist/Monk.
Kirieya Sniper,
my
Necromancer/Mesmer.
Asasina Sniper,
my
Ranger/Warrior.Then, to get a preview of what some higher level stuff looked like, I made Etemis Sniper (Elem, Monk) with the option to be lvl 20 for the event. Here's the stuff that she had on her.
Head Items

And for kicks I took a picture of a nice part of the town I was in
Here's Sapphire
Sniper, my
lvl 16 Elementalist/Monk. Her lvl 15 test armor is dyed blue.
I made her some new armor, there were several choices in type for
lvl 17. I chose Pyromancer armor which gave +10 against fire -10
against water. I only made the Shirt, Skirt and Boots which I then dyed
blue (they came purple). I also made an All Seeing Eye circlet thing.
Here's Kirieya Sniper,
my
lvl 15 Necromancer/Mesmer.
Here's my friend, Vorel Lix, (aka Raige) lvl 15
Ranger/Mesmer.

Here's a screenshot of the henchmen you can add to your group.
There's only 4 classes, Monk, Ranger, Warrior and Elementalist, and you
can only have 1 of each so you can't have a full group of 6 with just
henchmen.

Henchmen
And
finally here's
screenshots of the character select screen..

Well I'm playing the World Beta Event (from Oct. 29th to Oct. 31st) There are 6 professions Warrior, Ranger, Monk, Necromancer, Elementalist and Mesmer. You choose your primary and secondary. Whatever you choose as your primary profession is what your base character looks like before you choose hairstyle/color, height and skin color. I made my first character Sapphire Sniper, an Elementalist/Monk with Princess Leia'ish hair and an evil grin. Load game.
First things first, looked over my stats, I'm already lvl 15 with 8 spells, 5 from Primary Elementalist and 3 from Monk. I also have a matching set of boots, skirt, shirt, gloves and a glowing circlet called a third eye.
A pop up tells me to run down the road and talk to the guy with a large ! above his name. He starts talking to me as I approach then tells me to dig through his chest for a suitable weapon. Then I'm told to talk to him again and he tells me to follow him and sprints off to a huge gate which opens as we approach. Then he tells me to tell some guy that he sent me and to be careful. Wish I could wave!
Through the gate I can see two monsters starting to fight each other. So I jump in and cast some of my fire spells. I finish them off and head down the path some more to a large Behemoth Crysalis blocking the way. He's down in less than 10 seconds. The path opens up and I continue on. Turning the corner and there's a guy running towards 2 undead monsters asking for help. I rush to aid him, keeping an eye on his health and whacking away at one of the monsters. Afterwards a dialog box pops up and Elias is thanking me for the help and he gives me 2 gold. Then he tells me that he can "customize" weapons for me. Bastard charges me 1 gold. But now my weapon says "customized for Sapphire Sniper" like my clothes and it has some extra damage added to it. Nice guy this Elias..
Right, back to the path...I hit the tab button to check around the corner for bad guys and I target another Behemoth Crysalis. So I head towards him and kick his ass. A new path opens up, there's a chest with 4 gold coins. Now I'm feeling like I'm playing Star Ocean. Further down the path, as I'm clicking my tab button repeatedly, I spy something moving around the bushes. Wondering why it's not showing up on my tab button radar I approach it and click on it. It says "OINK" and now wants to follow me around. Riiiiight... back to the main path ...
There's a lvl 8 gyspie ettin waiting for me, so I blast it up and "Piggie" just stays behind me saying "OINK".. good piggie.. let's go. Next I battle 3 little things, easily defeating them, then another gyspie ettin as I get to the bridge.
After a battle with 3 more little goblin type things. I see a guy with a large ! above his head. I approach him and a dialogue box pops up and he asks me if I just want to talk or if I have any guts. Then he says lets go find some trouble. I have the option to say "Heck yeah, let's go" or "umm maybe next time." I choose the former and now I have a group window and he's following me like "Piggie". He is helping me fight though. Sorry Piggie..
Now we run into a bit of trouble with 4 heavy monsters against me and warrior dude. But someone runs up saying "hurry follow me, this place is not safe" so I follow him to a gate and he tells me to push the lever on the left while he pushes the one on the right. The gate opens and he tells me to talk to Justicar Torimo.
Through the gate, there are 3 sets of people. Each having their own conversation. I see Torimo (he's got a giant ! above his head) and a recruit talking about wanting to fight instead of guard the city. I see a father and son talking about how things used to be before the war and two women are haggling over the price of some lettuce. So I talk to Torimo and he opens the gate to the city for me and tells me to check in with Armen the Guide.
I "zone" and see Armen (those giant !'s are pretty hard to miss). I talk to him and he tells me that that White Mantle owns this town and to check in with Mantle Knight Karriya. Sadly I don't see "Piggie" anywhere but the Warrior Henchmen is still listed in my party.
Across from him I see a crowd of people standing around a guy with a giant ! above his head so I talk to him and he tells me some history and offers to train me if I have skill points and gold. Each spell seems to cost 1 skill point but the gold cost raises by 1 each time I train. There's a group of henchmen near the gate I entered, Monk, Warrior, Elementalist and Ranger. I guess I can take as many along as I want to. But they do take cash splits when there is any. But they don't take items. Nice way to group in my opinion :) they don't whine, don't run off and do their own thing, don't ninja loot, don't afk, they also seem to be rather adept at maneuvering around corners.
I followed the directions to find the White Mantle Knight lady and she offered me a quest but said I needed a full group. Just standing there reading her text I got 5 invites. So I joined one and before I knew it we were being thrown into an "Instanced" town under attack. Without a word from anyone, we started plowing through the bad guys until someone took a wrong turn and we all got split into small groups. 4 of us died. But I think we managed to get rez'd. There was no pop up box to confirm that but I had a 10% death penalty. A few minutes later we all got seperated again and we ALL died this time. Now a pop up box did show up and say we had failed and were being transported back to town.
I realized that you can't switch spell hotkeys anywhere other than in town. Which sucks. And I wonder if I can take some of those henchmen along for that mission. I'm gonna take a stroll around town, then head back out to the path that I was on before and try to get some more cash. That's about all I've discovered so far. I'll post again if anything interesting happens.
